猴字成语:converting english names to chinese characters

I'm wondering if there is a system of converting English/Foreign names to Chinese characters.
For example:
John = 约翰
Sydney = 悉尼
Melbourne = 墨尔本
Hamilton = 哈密尔顿
Malaysia = 马里西亚
Is there a standard system for doing this? What is it? What if I want to write an English/Foreign Langauge name in Chinese characters, what characters should I use? Can I use any characters that sound the same, or should I only use certain characters?

There is a language translater site thats converts many languages into many different languanges

No standard... Just by sound and bound to each word in Chinese.
有是一个标准系统为做这吗? 它是什么? 若我想要写英国人外国Langauge 名字在汉字, 什么字符我应该使用? 能我使用听起来同样的所有字符, 或我应该只使用某些字符吗?
